How We Build a Stone Container Before It Reaches Arizona

A container is not just a shopping cart.

Every slab we bring in takes space. Every choice affects the full mix. If we bring in too much of one material, we limit room for other options. If we bring in too many statement pieces, the container can become hard to sell. If we play it too safe, then the inventory feels flat. This was a learning curve at first, over purchasing slabs to please the supplier. Or too much variety and not enough slabs can leave a few pieces being left alone for smaller projects.

There has to be a balance.

We need materials that people already request, such as warm quartzites and lighter natural stones. That was tough for us. We love art! But we had to purchase the whites… and then we saw how expressive they can be as well. Still, we needed pieces that feel more expressive, because those are often the slabs that stop us in the showroom.

The goal is to build a container that feels curated. A mix of practical, beautiful, memorable, and project-ready.

Price Has to Make Sense Too

This is the part nobody loves to talk about, but it matters.

A slab does not become worth bringing in just because it is beautiful. The landed cost has to make sense. Freight, tariffs, duties, container space, handling, and storage all affect the final number.

If the material becomes too expensive by the time it gets here, we have to ask whether it still makes sense for our clients.

That does not mean we only choose safe or inexpensive materials. It means we need to understand the value behind what we are bringing in.

Some slabs are worth the higher cost because they are rare, stunning, or hard to find locally. Take our newest arrival from Tanzania, the cristallo murano. New, fresh, cool, expensive, but not for everyone’s liking. It may be beautiful, but it’s not practical for many due to the price. Still, it is good to have that balance between budget and luxury.
